preparing children . . .

. . . in a safe environment

providing a sound education . . .

. . . building the future

Safe and Sound was established in 1995 with two staff members and 5 children.

A few years before this a number of people of the Highway Assembly of God Church in Edenvale were concerned about the situation in South Africa. How could a white urban group make a contribution to building the nation. A number of options were investigated. It became apparent that although situated in the suburbs, a number of people from the townships worked in the area as well as the fact that in any suburb in South Africa, there are many domestic workers. All of these individuals had young children who may or may not have been getting proper pre schooling education.

It was also known that what went for preschool education was really just a system of child care - and of varying degrees of quality.

The concept of Safe and Sound was borne - provide preschool education and care for those in the suburb, be they children of residents, domestic workers or employees who worked in the area. Safe and Sound adopted a subsidy system for the previously disadvantaged. The longer term vision at the time, was that the urban school would be used for training individuals from the townships and informal settlements so that they would be able to go back to their communities and be in a position to earn an income while providing quality education and care for pre school children.

The training is a key aspect of the work of safe and Sound and well over 30 individuals have been trained. To date 30 satellite Safe and Sound Learning Centres have been established. Some of these are small home based units while others are large community oriented schools.

Satellites are located in many different area including Stilfontein, Finetown, Pietersburg and  Sevenfontein.

The original Safe and Sound Learning Centre in Edenvale continues to be the centre of training and now has 50 to 60 children with a staff of twelve.
